The Importance of Quality Eyewear Lens Technology: An accurate prescription is just one step towards realizing your best possible vision. We often forget that the kind of quality materials to correct your vision are just as important as the prescription itself. Taking into consideration your lifestyle, the level of durability and desired longevity for your lenses are all so important in your quest for impeccable vision.
The reality is that not all lenses are built the same. Lets skip the complicated science lesson, and take a quick look at how far lens technology has progressed, and some awesome tips for ensuring your best vision yet!
Love Thy Eyewear Lens: Way Back When…
In its infancy, early corrective eyewear was made from glass – that’s right, we said it – a material just as heavy and breakable as you could imagine. Glass would offer absolutely no UV protection from the suns harmful rays, and probably wasn’t the most ideal material to have hanging around your face if they were to shatter or break. People with strong prescriptions would tend to forgo eyewear altogether, as it was uncomfortable and unflattering. Not surprisingly, the ‘oogly-eyed coke bottle’ look never quite took off…. so it’s a good thing we’ve come a long way since then!
Love Thy Eyewear Lens: Standard Plastic
Standard plastic lenses were introduced in the 1960s. These lenses are of low cost, and can offer good optical quality – but can be quite thick for people with higher prescriptions. They can also crack when drilled, so a standard plastic may not be a suitable choice for those who opt for a rimless design. Lastly, plastic can also have a tendency to scratch more easily – so it is super important to take good care of such a fragile lens material.
Love Thy Eyewear Lens: Polycarbonate
Polycarbonate made its eyewear lens debut in the 1980s. Some of its best features are that they are impact resistant and light, making it an awesome choice for people who play sports, or could be rough on their glasses. Polycarbonate lenses also provide UV protection to keep your beautiful eyes unharmed from damaging UVA and UVB rays. Bring on the sun rays!
Pro Tip: Eyeglass lens thickness is often determined in part by the size and style of the frame you choose. For thinner lenses, choose smaller, round or oval frames. Also, acetate frames hide edge thickness better. Our handmade, MOSHdesigns frames are constructed from this highly durable material.
Love Thy Eyewear Lens: Trivex
Much like polycarbonate, trivex lenses have a lot in common in that they are exceptionally lightweight and impact resistant – properties that make both lenses equally suited for safety glasses, sports glasses and other protective eyewear.
The major difference between a polycarbonate and trivex-based lens lies in how the material is constructed. The results? Sharper optics, a thinner design, and increased durability. While trivex-based lenses are a more of an investment option than polycarbonate or standard plastic lenses – they do offer the highest in strength, quality, safety, comfort and appearance.
Pro Tip: Many eye care professionals recommend trivex and/or polycarbonate-based materials for children’s eyeglasses, sunglasses, sports – as well as for protective wear.
